The Application Math Your Student Needs to See

The Application Math Your Student Needs to See

Here are the numbers, straight from a recent InterviewPal breakdown of the job search.

The average corporate job posting draws roughly 250 applications. If your student is applying cold through job boards with no connection inside, they may need to send fifty to one hundred applications to hear back once.

A referred candidate is roughly ten times more likely to land the interview.

Read those two facts next to each other, and the strategy writes itself. Yet almost every student we meet is running the first play, hard, and calling the silence a personal failure.

It is not personal. It is arithmetic.

Two hundred applications sent into a portal are not persistence. It is a full-time job with a 2% response rate and no salary.

The fix is not to apply less. It is to change what you do before you apply. Every application that goes out cold should have one attempt at a warm path attached to it: an alum in the department, a former intern, a person who commented on the company’s post last week.

One conversation before the application is worth more than ten applications after it.

If your student comes home discouraged, do not tell them to try harder. Ask them a better question: who did you talk to this week?

That is the number that moves. The application count never was.

Career Currency Academy replaces the application grind with a referral strategy students can actually run.
