The Professional Network Almost No Student Uses

Associations Now ran a piece in June about how professional and trade associations can better serve young professionals. It was written for association executives, and it’s far more useful to students and parents than it is to them.

Almost nobody tells an eighteen-year-old this, so here it is. Every industry your student might enter has an association behind it. Accounting, construction, marketing, healthcare, water utilities, logistics, insurance, engineering, waste management. All of them.

These organizations bring people in a field together. They run the conferences, publish the trade press, host local chapters, mentor newcomers, and post jobs that never reach the big job boards. Student membership is often free, and when it isn’t, it usually costs less than a textbook.

We’ve worked with more than 125 trade and professional associations on getting young talent into their industries, and the story is the same everywhere. The associations are desperate for young members and can’t find them. The students have no idea associations exist. Both sides are standing in the same hallway wondering where everybody is.

That’s a solvable problem, and solving it takes one search.

Have your student look up the professional association for the field they’re considering. Join as a student member. Attend one local chapter meeting.

One meeting puts them in a room with thirty working professionals in their target field, most of whom will be genuinely pleased that a student showed up at all. Try getting that from thirty online applications.

The door is open, and almost nobody walks through it.
